BCNET is working to expand the usage of lightpath technology between BCNET members and for specialized and experimental research projects. Lightpaths have been instrumental in the success of educational projects such as the UBC Medical Expansion Program, and grid-computing initiatives, such as Westgrid. BCNET plans to build lightpaths between all major BC research institutes including UBC, SFU, U Vic, UNBC and BCIT.

What are lightpaths?
Lightpaths are direct point-to-point channels or dedicated wave signals. Network managers can connect optical network endpoints remotely, it as simple as administering software from the desktop. For example, BCNET connected three institutes for the UBC Medical Expansion project. The dedicated lightpaths enabled high-bandwidth activities such as videoconferencing for lectures and meetings.
What are the benefits of lightpaths?
- Dramatically increase data transport capacity at low costs
- Can customize traffic flows
- Enhanced performance
- Optimal management
