Over the past five years, we’ve seen two particular aspects of computing have a rapidly growing impact on the practice of research. First, in a widely diverse set of disciplines, key advances in research are increasing being driven by data-intensive research practices and methods. Second, access to cloud computing is providing new and valuable means for researchers to access computing power, to share code and leverage algorithms, and to store and share data. Why is this occurring? Is this a short term trend or fundamental shift? What are the implications for researchers, IT professionals, and universities?
