Can a musical ensemble function without a director? Can a software development team deliver without structure or management? Self-directed teams are becoming the norm, whether in an agile delivery, data science or research environment. Is 'managing a self-directed team' a contradiction? How do we lead such a team, and how do we adjust our management style and approach to add value while not losing the benefits of self-direction? Using examples I will look at the pitfalls and opportunities for leading teams such as this.
